Essentials for touring internationally
Getting signed up and performing on the international circuit is a good way to develop one’s career, promote music, increase sales and distribution. Performing in different cultures and environment can be an exciting, rewarding and very enriching experience.
As for any international artistic activities, there are important requirements to comply with whether you book your band directly or through promoters, booking agents or clubs. Here is some general information to consider for navigating the music-biz for a successful tour overseas.
Contracts: Negotiate and review contracts prior to touring.
Scheduling: Set up tour well in advance for each city.
Official documents:
. Valid passport: Many countries require your passport to be valid for 3-6 months beyond your departure date from the country you are visiting. Be sure your passport is valid before flying abroad or you may be denied boarding.
. Valid work permit/visa: if you are planning to touring overseas, figuring out your work permit/visa situation should be a top priority. Consult with your booking agent or check requirements with the proper authorities before traveling and performing.
Insurance: check your current coverage with your insurance company and evaluate if you require additional travel insurance for medical services overseas and for instruments/equipment.
Travel expenses to consider:
. Airlines – buy tickets early
. Accommodations/Food
. Equipment rental: evaluate differential cost between using a freight forwarding company to ship your instruments or renting overseas.
. Vehicle rental.
Financial and legal factors:
. Performance fees/currency
. Local taxes
