The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) presents Philly Celebrates Jazz, a celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April. All month long, OACCE presents jazz-inspired events in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods and promotes jazz happenings across the city.

Mélange Jazz Collective and special guest artist V. Shayne Frederick were thrilled and honored to perform again this year at Philadelphia Marketplace, B/C Connector at Philadelphia International Airport in celebration of Black History Month. Featuring Laurent Bass, tenor sax; Bert Harris, bass; David Dzubinski, keyboard; V. Shayne Frederick, vocals.

February 1 – The Art of Wood-Fired Ceramics Featuring Peter Callas at Community Arts Center in Wallingford, Artist Reception.

Mélange Jazz Collective performed for an amazing opening reception for The Art of Wood Fired Ceramics: Featuring Peter Callas. The show is on view at Community Arts Center in Wallingford until March 7.

Mélange’s featured musicians: bassist Bert Harris; pianist David Dzubinski; saxophonist Laurent Bass; percussionist Karen Smith.

Saturday, February 1 – The Art of Wood Fired Ceramics, Community Arts Center in Wallingford

Artist Reception featuring Peter Callas– Performance by Mélange Jazz Collective Quartet: featuring bassist Bert Harris, saxophonist Laurent Bass, pianist David Dzubinski, percussionist Karen Smith.The Art of Woodfired Ceramics featuring Peter Callas

This invitational international exhibition, curated by Brett Thomas and Mark Tyson, features work by 40 artists from Japan, France, New Zealand, Indonesia, Denmark and the United States. The work showcases the uniqueness, power and breadth of the wood-firing technique with styles ranging from wabi-sabi to expressionism.

The show is anchored by a collection of large expressionist ceramic sculptures by Peter Callas who is celebrating his 50th year as a ceramic artist.

Wednesday, February 19 – Jazz Bridge Neighborhood and Special Concert Series

Jazz Bridge concert at Fellowship Hall, Ridge Avenue United Methodist Church, 7:30pm-9:00pm, Neighborhood and Special Concert Series featuring Mélange Jazz Collective Sextet, curated by Bert Harris.

Mélange will perform original compositions penned by members of the band.

Jazz Bridge’s Real Philadelphia Book/Neighborhood Concert series showcases a great lineup of local jazz musicians who are invited to perform their original music compositions to audiences who appreciate jazz and blues.

These concerts take place during October through May on first Wednesdays in Cheltenham, PA; on first Thursdays in Collingswood, NJ, and on third Wednesdays in Roxborough (Philadelphia), PA.

We recently attended two performances by iconic jazz musicians.

– Odeon Pope – Sounds of the Circle Premiere, La Rose Jazz Club, October 12. https://www.pewcenterarts.org/event/sounds-circle-premiere-2019-10-12-000000

Pioneering jazz saxophonist, Pew Fellow, composer and performer Odeon Pope who grew up in Philadelphia lead an ensemble of great Philadelphia musicians playing Odeon Pope’s original compositions for his Sounds of the Circle project at La Rose Jazz Club in Germantown. This was a historic performance!

– Cecil McBee – Jazz On a High Floor in the Afternoon at the Whitney Museum, New York November 16 https://whitney.org/events/cecil-mcbee,

The Whitney Museum is presenting a series of cross-generational live in-gallery jazz performances in coordination with the multimedia exhibit showing by artist Jason Moran that pay homage to iconic New York jazz venues. The quintessential bassist Cecil McBee, accompanied by two talented musicians, performed original compositions at Slugs’ Saloon, a staged installation reminiscent of the historic East Village jazz landmark. It was a fantastic concert to attend.

Summer vibes may be ending soon but we’re excited about the return of a vibrant fall season in our city, a season filled with creativity, inspiration, celebrations at events and happenings of many kinds. We, at LB Entertainment, are thrilled to launch a new season of music entertainment for our clients’ public and private special events and showcasing an array of great live music performed by dedicated musical artists.

The Art of the Duo

What do you get when the love of jazz brings together two uniquely talented longtime musician friends? The end result is the exciting and versatile duo of tenor saxophonist Laurent Bass and bassist Bert Harris and their innovative and creative music performances in their new project, Mélange Duo.

The pair has been collaborating and performing for over 10 years with our band Mélange jazz Collective as a trio and quartet developing a strong musical connection as musicians. Their new collaboration as a duo is a unique fusion of musical styles and backgrounds. As one of the leading duos in our area, Mélange Duo has been featured in different venues for public and private events.

DesignPhiladelphia, Philadelphia Center for Architecture and Design’s signature event returns October 2 to October 13, 2019.  As the oldest and largest design festival of its kind in the country, DesignPhiladelphia, a world-class festival, showcases Philadelphia’s vibrant design scene, shining the spotlight on emerging and established designers and creative thinkers.

Over the course of 11 days, DesignPhiladelphia will celebrate the work of local designers, architects, + creative professionals with 120+ public events.

On February 8, Philadelphia International Airport and Philadelphia Market Place hosted a jazz performance honoring Black History Month. Travelers were entertained to the fantastic sounds of Mélange Jazz Collective with singer V. Shayne Frederick on the B/C Stage.

 Essentials for touring internationally

Getting signed up and performing on the international circuit is a good way to develop one’s career, promote music, increase sales and distribution. Performing in different cultures and environment can be an exciting, rewarding and very enriching experience.

As for any international artistic activities, there are important requirements to comply with whether you book your band directly or through promoters, booking agents or clubs. Here is some general information to consider for navigating the music-biz for a successful tour overseas.

Contracts: Negotiate and review contracts prior to touring.

Scheduling: Set up tour well in advance for each city.

Official documents:

. Valid passport: Many countries require your passport to be valid for 3-6 months        beyond your departure date from the country you are visiting. Be sure your passport is valid before flying abroad or you may be denied boarding.

.  Valid work permit/visa: if you are planning to touring overseas, figuring out your work permit/visa situation should be a top priority. Consult with your booking agent or check requirements with the proper authorities before traveling and performing.

Insurance: check your current coverage with your insurance company and evaluate if you require additional travel insurance for medical services overseas and for instruments/equipment.

Travel expenses to consider:

. Airlines – buy tickets early

. Accommodations/Food

. Equipment rental: evaluate differential cost between using a freight forwarding             company to ship your instruments or renting overseas.

. Vehicle rental.

Financial and legal factors:

. Performance fees/currency

. Local taxes

. Local fees

. Royalties

Language barriers: learn a few valuable sentences and understanding of cultural etiquette.

Voltage differences.

Technology/Communication: check with your carrier for options on international plans.
