High Notes for a Perfect Day: A Wedding Celebration
We recently had the pleasure to perform Live for the wedding ceremony and cocktail reception for a very delightful couple – and music lovers – at the iconic World Café Live at the Queen, in Wilmington World Cafe Live Wilmington
The first of our high notes featured our Jazz duet (bass, keyboard) who performed during the musical prelude as the first guests arrived and continued through the processional in the Olympia Room, beautifully illuminated by the glow of a late autumn sunset.
“It might be you”, a specially selected song performed solo on soprano sax marked the entrance and presentation of the bride. The lighting of the candles by the bride and groom followed as our keyboard soloist performed a creative arrangement of Beyoncé’s Ave Maria.
During the recessional, Mélange Jazz Trio performed a resounding “I can’t stop loving you”, by Kem, one of the couple’s favorite artist and song.
The cocktail reception was held on the Balcony where guests enjoyed the cool sounds of Mélange performing a mix of jazz, blues and reggae.
A DJ provided the entertainment during the reception that took place on the first floor.
It was an absolute pleasure to work closely with the bride and groom for over 6 months and to learn about their music preferences and about their vision for their wedding. Our close collaboration with them, with our talented versatile musicians, and our coordination with the venue helped make this occasion a very special and memorable day.
Mélange Jazz Collective’s artists:
Laurent Bass: saxophonist, performed solo and with trio.
Bert Harris: bass player, performed with duo and trio.
Walter Runge: keyboardist, performed solo, with duo and trio.

“For the Love of Germantown”
We are proud and honored to have been a part of Philadelphia Jazz Project/Germantown United CCD’s project and to have Mélange Jazz Collective featured on the album “For the Love of Germantown” with an original composition written by our bass player, Bert Harris. This album is in celebration of the rich culture, diversity and history of Germantown, a Philadelphia neighborhood, home of many renowned past and present performing and visual artists. Mélange Jazz Collective Quartet recorded and performed “Sunday Sermon on Mars”, Bert Harris’s original composition. The piece is dedicated to Sun Ra, a visionary musician, composer and band leader who resided in Germantown for some time.
Mélange’s featured musicians:
Bert Harris, composer and bassist; Laurent Bass, saxophonist; Kimpedro Rodriguez, drummer; Steve Strawitz, guitarist.
The CD is available for purchase on Germantown United CCD’s website Germantown United CCDor by contacting their office directly http://germantownunitedcdc.org/
Philadelphia Jazz Project http://www.philajazzproject.org/ – Press Release:
Philadelphia is home to strong musical traditions like Jazz, Gospel, DooWop, R&B, Rock and Hip Hop. Our greatest strength has been the unexpected and wonderful blending and swirling of these traditions into new and fascinating musical creations. One place where this magic happens is Germantown. This community in the Northwestern region of Philadelphia was and continues to be a neighborhood rich in culture, history and diversity. Many renowned Philadelphia musicians, writers, visual artists, media makers and dancers grew up, or made their homes in Germantown.
In the Spring of 2016, Philadelphia Jazz Project (PJP) began a collaboration with Germantown United Community Development Corporation [GUCDC] and a group of talented Germantown musicians. The task: To record and produce a compelling CD, as a fundraiser for GUCDC. The goal: To celebrate the historical cultural strength and diversity of the Germantown community.
Three recording studios were used, including Boom Room Studios, Spice House Sound and Germantown’s Rittenhouse Soundworks. PJP reached out to more than twenty musicians, vocalists and poets seeking participants for this project.
